StorageTo help us get an idea of your storage needs have a few pieces of information ready when you call.

How much do you need to store? A few rooms can contain a lot more than they seem to at first thought. Remember the closets, attic, basement garage and shed. How much storage you need must also take into account the volume of the packing materials you use.

How long will it need to be stored? If you are storing while the new place is being readied, take into account the inevitable construction delays which occur with new construction or renovation. Planning for an extra month on top of what the contractor promised will make any delay less painful.

Is climate control a consideration? Mildew can grow on upholstery and artwork even if it does not get wet. In the humid climates of some areas of the country it is highly advisable to make sure that the facilities used for storage are fully climate controlled.

Is portable onsite storage an option? Portable storage is a convenient storage option in which the unit is delivered to your home where you fill it up. When you are ready to go it can either be taken to another location for in transit storage or delivered wherever you are moving to.

When looking for a storage space to rent, there are some factors you may want to consider to make the experience more cost-effective, convenient, and pleasant. Begin by determining how much space you will need, and how long you will need it for. Some additional features include:

Accessibility – Most storage facilities are accessible 7 days a week. Certain site managers are amenable to making special arrangements for those who cannot make it to the facilities during business hours. Storage Factors

Air conditioning/climate control – Being able to control the temperature of the storage unit ensures that your more delicate belongings are well-protected from heat and moisture.

Discounts – Storage space is typically rented on a month-to-month basis. For those willing to rent space for longer periods of time, typically three months or more, a special discounted rate may be available.

Drive up access – Those who want drive up access to their storage unit may pay more for the ease of loading and unloading, but the convenience will be worth it.

Elevator access – If your belongings need to be moved upstairs, paying a bit more for elevator access may be a good idea.

Insurance – Even though storage facilities take various measures to keep your belongings secure, it is always a good idea to purchase insurance for peace of mind.

Security – In addition to being well-lit, storage facilities may install equipment such as alarm systems, coded entry systems, electronic gates, and surveillance cameras to keep your possessions safe. Some facility managers even live on the premises, and can take care of any emergencies immediately, should they arise.

Some of these options may increase monthly fees, but depending on your needs, it may be well worth the few extra bucks!

There are many types of packing supplies available to meet your packing, moving, and storage needs. Some of these items are:
  • Bubble and foam wrap
  • Foam peanuts
  • Furniture pads
  • Locks
  • Mattress bags and covers
  • Packing paper
  • Pouches for fragile items
  • Stretch wrap
  • Tape
There are also boxes specially designed for:
  • Appliances
  • Dishes, glasses, and fragile items
  • Documents and files
  • Electronics
  • Lamps and other oddly shaped items
  • Wardrobes

Some helpful storage and moving tips include:

Completely fill boxes by stuffing empty spaces with newspaper to prevent items from shifting and boxes from collapsing.

Don't overpack boxes. Boxes that are too full may topple and burst when stacked.

Don't store combustible items such as chemicals and paints or perishable foods.

Drain all fluids from gardening equipment before storing or moving.

Clearly mark all boxes with its contents and if applicable, what room the items belong in.

Utilize additional space from large appliances like refrigerators and ovens to store items such as blankets and towels.

Save space by disassembling the legs of tables.

Books should be packed flat instead of upright to reduce spine damage.

Don't go cheap on the lock. Locks with exposed shackles can be cut with bolt cutters, saws, and files, so look for a discus-style model to protect your possessions from thieves.
