Moving your plants

tipsHere are some valuable tips to help you in moving your plants.

Whenever possible take the plants along with you in the car they need special attention and controlled temperatures which may not be availble in the moving van.

A moving company will accept plants as shipments only when you are moving less than 150 miles and the foreseen delivery is within 24 hours from the time of loading.

Let your mover know that you are moving your plants. Special materials needed for packing the plants may be available for purchase.

States like Florida, California and Arizona have stringent rules on Plant transportation.  Some states require a “Gypsy Moth Inspection Certificate”. Consult your state Department of Agriculture or Department of Natural Resources and get the regulations of your destination state.

The general rule is that your plants should have been grown indoors in sterilized potting soil.

Transfer the plants to unbreakable plastic pots. Decorative pots should be wrapped and packed like any other fragile ceramic item.

Prune larger plants back.

Eliminate insects and parasites from the plants.

Plants packed in boxes should be anchored properly.  Place some paper at the bottom of the pot and cushion the branches and leaves with soft paper.

Write on the box that it has a plant inside.

Pack and load the plants just before you depart.

Park the car in a shaded area.

Unpack the plants immediately after your arrival.
