Moving Advice

Making lists will help to keep track of all the details.

With all the activities occurring simultaneously at moving time even a skilled planner might forget the small details if it were not for the lists they keep. The following is a list of some of the little things we often overlook in a move. Having this handy checklist with you during the move will save a lot of inconvenience later.

  • Pack one room at a time - if you start too many projects around the house at the same time you will overwhelm yourself.
  • Heavy things go to the bottom of the box, lighter things go on top.
  • Lighter items go in bigger boxes and heavy items in smaller boxes.
  • Health Records - Get the medical and dental records for everyone in the family. Don't forget to get the veterinary records for your pets.
  • School Records - Your child's permanent school records are important documents necessary to enroll in the new school. Often copies of the records are not sufficient so get documents with an official seal on them.
  • Destination Address - This is easily forgotten as it is new. Have this address in your wallet. Post it in a prominent place in your new home so the whole family has access to it.
  • Banking - Collect everything stored in safe deposit boxes and get them transferred to your new Bank.
  • Pets - Moving companies generally don't transport animals. Make alternate arrangements for the pets. Have information about veterinary facilities in your new area.
  • Garage Door Openers - Don't forget to take the electric garage door opener out of your car. Leave it in a prominent place for the new owner of your old home.
  • Dry Cleaning - Have you collected the clothes at the drycleaner?
  • Leave your old home clean when you depart. You can arrange for a final cleaning service.
  • Collect all the spare keys, ones you might have hidden under the rock for emergencies and the set that might be with the neighbor. Hand over all the keys to the new owner.
  • This is only a partial list of the million little details to remember when moving. Ask friends and family what their biggest moving mistake was and add it to this list.

At such a sad time in our lives, my wife and I were also faced with needing to move her things out of her apartment.
